Earlier diagnosis and treatment, plus biological therapies, have transformed the outlook for
many patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In the future, new biomarkers for diagnosis,
prognosis and therapeutic response will further improve outcomes. Additionally, preclinical
diagnosis and tolerogenic therapies could provide sustained remission for some individuals,
although ethical and societal challenges must also be addressed before rheumatoid arthritis
becomes' yesterday's disease'.
